On the right side of the painting, a general in armor rides a warhorse standing on a rocky cliff, his back slightly to the side, overlooking the vast army below. The warrior wears layered black lamellar armor, a cape fluttering in the wind, and a long ribbon tied to his topknot; he holds a straight sword, its blade angled towards the horse's side. The warhorse is muscular and entirely black, standing firmly on the edge of the cliff, its tail and mane gently waving in the wind. The lower half of the painting depicts dense formations of soldiers as blurry silhouettes, with spears standing tall and banners fluttering, faintly visible through the mist. In the distance, steep mountain peaks are hidden in the upper right corner amidst clouds and mist, and 7 small birds fly across the pale sky in the center of the painting. On the left side of the painting are two columns of large, wild cursive calligraphy: the main text reads “一身转战三千里，一剑曾当百万师” (A lifetime of fighting three thousand miles, a single sword once faced a million soldiers), accompanied by a smaller vertical signature below “王维” (Wang Wei), and a red seal.
